Summary
Part 1
An injured Meredith gets out of bed and wanders through the Long House. Teria is teaching Danielle how to throw a knife while Finbar watches and Ferwig practices swinging his spear. All are startled when Misha bursts in, shouting for all Longs to gather, as Caroline and Ralls hurry after. Misha stops to offer Ferwig and Teria to join for three thousand gold each before hurrying on. Caroline tells them that Nasoj has stolen Misha's black axe. Ferwig and Teria are confused at first, until they realize it was the one that summoned a "demon" at the counterstrike.
Misha also calls for Rickkter, Andre, George, and Edmund as he enters his office and sharpens a stray dagger. Caroline furiously responds that she will get all the able-bodied. This only enrages him further, as he wants everyone; he stumbles on his injured leg and collapses into a heap. Caroline refuses to let anyone else die for us and storms out.
As requested, the able-bodied Longs — Caroline, Finbar, Danielle, and Padraic — and Misha's requested volunteers (except Andre) appear in Misha's office. Terrant is also present. At the last minute, David enters carrying the injured Arla, who insisted on coming. David turns to go, but Misha asks him to stay and join them.
Misha explains that two days ago, he was ambushed, and Whisper was stolen. Misha is angry that he had to return to Metamor; if he hadn't left, they wouldn't have a two-day head start on them. Finbar counters that Misha needed to recover first, and Edmund worries that the axe is controlling him. Misha comments that as its wielder, it is his duty to protect it from evil, as Nasoj will attempt to do. Ferwig and Teria are shocked to learn that it is a runic weapon from the Kkarrt Empire. It can cut through anything, and will kill anyone who touches it with ill intent — Misha looks directly at Teria while saying this.
Rickkter comments that Nasoj must have wanted the axe for something specific, since he didn't kill Misha when he had the chance. No one can agree on what that purpose was, but they agree it is likely headed straight for Nasoj's citadel, and it is there they will have to go before Nasoj has time to use it against them.
The meeting is interrupted by Eldrid and Amelia, his badger bodyguard, who were just in the cathedral headed for Hough's room. Misha coldly dismisses them and continues with the topic of how to get to the citadel. They decide to fly to just south of Kelm, and find a way to break into the citadel. Misha decides to ask Andwyn for his intelligence on the citadel for a direct strike. Misha already knows how to sneak in, but opts to keep it a secret for now.
George refuses to join, as the Keep needs someone to run the scouts. Rickkter surprises everyone by suggesting Charles join them. Misha suggests they leave in four hours; George responds they need at least two days to prepare. Misha finally snarls that they will leave tomorrow at dawn. Before everyone leaves, Misha enigmatically asks Rickkter to bring "her", using a gesture to explain.
Misha fumes in his office when George visits him, nonchalantly picking through the mess on the floor. Misha has a deep respect for George, and is angry when George chastises him for recklessness. George says he knows how dangerous Whisper is, but also what a disaster it would be if Misha lost his life for it. Soon he must decide which he loves more: Whisper or Caroline.
Misha heads to his apartment, and finds himself in Amelia's bedroom, where she and her charge are making love. Misha finally realizes that Kyia is bringing him and Eldrid together, and asks Eldrid if he has some authority over Nasoj's troops, or knows his way through Nasoj's citadel. Eldrid says that it depends on the soldier, but he does know of a tower that offers a way into Nasoj's citadel. Misha invites him to come along and help him recover Whisper. Eldrid is greatly troubled to learn they are to recover the axe that nearly killed him. Misha gently tells him he is a great fighter and would be a great help to them, but he will respect Eldrid's decision.
Some time later, Eldrid is in his quarters, staring at the sum of all his possessions: the armor Nasoj made for him, some weapons, and some gold. He picks up a bundle of ancient weapons and armor that he won in combat against a Turi chieftain. He had never used them, as the weapons didn't suit him and the armor didn't fit. Now, he feels ready. He has decided to join Misha. He knows he must face his greatest fear, Whisper, to overcome it. Amelia embraces him and asks him to return safely.
Part 2
Philip, leader of the Metamor griffons, refuses to let his people go on a suicide mission. Misha is furious, but Rickkter intervenes. He'll negotiate with the griffons as Misha handles the Longs.
Carrying a small item in his hand, Misha can't bring himself to knock on Caroline's door. He gives up and starts wandering the Keep. A nearby door opens, and David looks out, having heard someone knocking. Misha turns and sees Caroline's door nearby. He apologizes, but David invites him inside to discuss something. Misha pockets his item and follows David.
Rickkter owns a black dagger, one of the Five Sisters. He keeps it locked in his cabinet, but he returns to his quarters to find it sitting on his table. He angrily rebukes it for resisting him until now. Tossing his jacket over it, he arms himself with his needed battle gear. He hesitates over his two most powerful weapons; only the black dagger is its equal. He turns to find his jacket now fallen to the floor. He grabs the dagger and leaves.
Misha visits the spymaster Andwyn, who has already heard of Nasoj's newest acquisition. He agrees to help Misha, but in return, Misha must deliver messages and supplies to his agents in Nasojassa.
Edmund refuses to let Terrant join him on the mission. He wants Terrant to lead their newly changed units on their first patrol with George.
While Misha and Rickkter are in the armory, Eldrid enters, confused to find himself there. Rickkter is baffled by his lack of armor or powerful weapons, but Eldrid simply says it is time for a change. Rickkter still can't decide what weapon he wants. Misha comments he already has a powerful weapon. Uncomfortable with personal questions, he leaves. Eldrid and Misha begin talking about Madog, whom Eldrid is afraid to meet. Rickkter returns with an ancient curved Elven sword.
Padraic joins them, and is startled by Eldrid's armor. He, like Eldrid, has Cenetl heritage and can speak the old language. He excuses himself to change armor.
Meanwhile, Whisper is using her power to manipulate people around her to try to escape. She finds two minds, one a simple innocent experiment of Nasoj's, the other a good and nearby soul.
In her room, Caroline applies white paint to camouflage herself. After dressing and gearing up, she hugs her father goodbye.
Caroline climbs a long flight of stairs and exits onto an elevated courtyard. Edmund, Ferwig, Teria, Danielle, Finbar, Misha, and Rickkter are already there. As she cuddles Misha, Philip flies in and lands. Madog also rushes in, spouting anachronistic warnings before gnawing on the stonework. He has come to say goodbye to Misha, but is confident he will return.
Part 3
Padraic finally arrives, dressed in the traditional, gaudy way of his ancestors. Though Rickkter is dismayed by it, Misha deems it acceptable. Misha also gives Ferwig back his seven-foot staff, Gruffydd.
Philip and Misha both explain their plan, though not fully so that spies won't overhear. Philip will fly fast and low to the ground to avoid detection until just inside Nasoj's territory. They'll travel on foot to Nasoj's fortress. Through some secret method, they will enter the fortress, retrieve Whisper, and exit the fortress without a direct confrontation. He reminds everyone that they are not to take unnecessary risks. He also demonstrates a couple of hand signals for flying.
With Philip (and another griffon morph, Marian) flying them, they land just outside of Glen Avery.
Terrant is frustrated while looking for the library. She asks a passing boy for directions, and he tells her to picture it in her mind. Sure enough, she finds it, and the boy is gone. She is awestruck by the library's size, and by the librarian Foxeris, who is in taur form. After a short conversation, Terrant requests a copy of a map of the area around the Keep. She is forced to admit that she is Edmund's lieutenant, before she hurries off.
Misha and the scouts stalk into Glen Avery, straight to Charles's house, where Kimberly directs him to a field where he is training Garigan. Charles instructs Garigan to continue training while he privates receives a briefing from Misha. Kimberly is shocked that Charles is leaving on such short notice, but Charles assures her he will return soon.
They return to the group, and Misha reminds them they are now on full patrol. They will first fly to an outpost, walking the last mile. Teria is skeptical of this plan, to Misha's consternation. Rickkter and Eldrid discuss the defenses of Nasojassa and the citadel, which Misha assures won't be a problem. All they have to worry about are the guards and wards over the axe. Leaving is also not an issue. Teria starts to argue, and Ferwig has to silence her. Misha notes it isn't the first time someone stole the axe, and briefly recollects a duke who stole it, only to die horribly when he tried to grasp it.
The flight is long and uneventful. Marian lands on a rock in the middle of the night, and Eldrid is impressed how well he can still see and smell. The griffons shift to morph form, and the team follows Misha.
Misha leads them to a tunnel, leading to some underground chambers carved in the rock. After giving basic instructions, he takes first watch. Finbar leads them to the barracks and explains how they can cook dinner without being detected.
Terrant knock on George's office to discuss the upcoming patrol. George asks why Terrant doesn't take the name Terry. He approves of Terrant's choice to bring horse archers, and lays out a map to plan their route, continuing to call her Terry. Terrant realizes George is deliberately keeping it safe so he can assess Terrant's troops. He dismisses her, calling her Terry again as she leaves.
In the early morning, Padraic is curious about Eldrid's Curaidh armor. Eldrid tells how he won his armor and weapons by helping a mountain tribe defeat a Beither. The only other survivor, Aneirin, gave him the armor, saying they would fit him when the time was right.
At mid-day, Edmund enters the observation room, where Misha is watching outside. He is not concerned when Edmund tells him that Finbar, Caroline, and he himself are worried about him. Misha explains that he and Whisper have a deep connection to each other. Before he focused on the Long Scouts, Whisper explained her powers, and taught him the ancient language of Kkarrt. Edmund is awed.
Some time later, Charles visits Misha, thanking him for still trusting him after the trial. Both of them have recently been betrayed by a friend of theirs. Misha is bitter that he will never get a chance to question Baldwin for his acts.
At Metamor Keep in the early morning, Terrant inspects her troops. A horse morph, Alwyn, is confused by the prospect of riding a horse as a horse. Knowing he had wanted to be a woman instead, Terrant kisses him and compliments him to boost his confidence. George comments on and praises her behavior, much to her confusion. He reminds her of the small scale of their mission, again calling her "Terry".
Part 4
Caroline is unable to sleep. The only other person up is Padraic, so she sits with him and asks about the bow he's cleaning. She asks about his leg injury, and what the Lightbringers required in return for its healing. Padraic is insulted by this; his family has served the Lightbringers well for generations, and that is payment enough. She apologizes for her curiosity, and he relaxes, saying that one of his ancestors helped the Old Ones by defeating an Avatar in combat. She notes how hard it must have been for them to live under Loriod.
Misha enters with a fearful look. Caroline leaves Padraic to talk to Misha. She worries it concerns the axe, but Misha assures her that he knows this will be his last great adventure with the axe; he wants to settle down and spend his life with her. Drawing forth a beautiful ring, he asks her to marry him. She embraces him and says yes.
Misha gathers everyone for a meeting. They'll need to fly by night for another week until they get close enough to walk. Philip says it will be safer to fly high and fast above the clouds, although the two griffon morphs are impressed by how fast the Long Scouts can walk.
Misha now reveals how he intends to get them out of the citadel. He reveals a metal ball and disk that David had loaned him. They contain runes that will allow everyone to teleport to the Sentinel, a stone column just outside of Metamor's protective spells. They only have one shot; Nasoj will know once it's been done.
After two days of peaceful flight, they are suddenly attacked by a drake. The drake is too fast for them to outrun. Misha orders Philip to drop them off and fly for home, and signals to the others to do the same. Philip slows down for Misha to roll off, but it's still so fast that Misha rolls into something and is knocked out. Misha soon awakes, in pain but not injured. He gathers the rest of the party and sets out for a three day walk to their first meeting spot.
Under a moonlit night, Caroline, Finbar, and Misha wait for the clouds to cover the moon. They rush across a farmyard to a barn, where the door opens soundlessly. Misha gives the appropriate pass phrase, and the hidden spy responds. He is annoyed at their tardiness, and he is even more annoyed when he learns the reason for jeopardizing his men and himself. He knows Whisper is powerless in Nasoj's hands, and thus believes Nasoj is only holding it to lure Misha into a trap. He dismisses Misha's claims of authority and insults him. Misha is furious, but Caroline reproaches Misha and asks the spy for shelter. The spy reacts more graciously to Caroline, and discreetly leads them out.
Terrant's patrol returns to Metamor. It was uneventful, but it allowed them to get used to their new bodies and back into a routine. George invites her to bathe and return to his place for a warm meal. Terrant is about to correct George's use of "Terry" but lets it go.
Misha's group is led through a tunnel and into a vegetable storeroom for the night. Misha takes the first watch. Once it ends, he wakes Rickkter and sleeps.
While drying off in the baths, Terrant realizes how little her troops have changed from the curse. She catches a sight of herself in the mirror and, after recognizing her birthmarks and muscles, finally accepts her female body. She still wishes she had been a cool predator, but realizes she could have had an even worse curse.
Misha and Caroline have another meeting with the spy. The spy still doesn't believe Nasoj has a plan for Whisper, so Misha and Caroline describe the ambush in detail. The spy is surprised, given how long Nasoj has wanted Misha dead, but finally convinced. The axe is likely in the citadel, and the spy believes getting in will be impossible. Misha says he just needs information; his people will do the rest.
The spy tells him that the only way in is a portal in the dungeons of Dubhar Tur, which can only be activated by a password known only by the Captain of the Guard. The dungeons can only be accessed by a tower, in which all visitors are scanned by powerful mages while they are asked their name and business. The inside of the tower is always being rearranged, but the portal is always in the basement. It is rumored that the guard is a magically-enslaved creature.
First is the matter of getting into town, past the town guards. Misha has a plan to disguise themselves as Druzhina, but the spy counters that not only would the guards detect such magic, they would need a citadel pass to enter. The spy can make a fake pass, but he doesn't believe Misha won't jeopardize him. Misha snarls and has to be calmed down by Caroline. Misha tells him that they won't be caught. After a long silence, the spy agrees to have the pass ready at their next stop in three days' time. Misha also passes along the supplies from Andwyn.
Part 5
Terrant has dinner with George. She asks if it is true that, on top of the many jobs he's done, he started off as a peasant. He confirms that he joined the mercenaries after a childhood of starving. He never stopped running until Metamor, where he doubts a woman will take an old bandit like him for a husband. Terrant praises him for having more nobility and courage than most nobles. Embarrassed, she changes subjects and asks about a great battle he was in and still has a bounty over. He delights in telling her about how he got the better of a nobleman's ego.
Misha's party makes it to the last meeting spot, a desolate ruin in the countryside. After activating the right stone and entering the hidden tunnel, Misha gives the correct password to the shadowed figures. Rickkter and Caroline drop off the needed supplies. The spy, Philip, tells them that most of them are poisons, and he explains in detail how one of them killed the planner of the Winter Assault. Misha acquires the pass. Rickkter is skeptical it will work, but they have no choice. They get further info on Nasojassa, which they will enter tomorrow.
Once outside town, Misha asks Rickkter for his dagger. He is reluctant to give it up, especially since Misha knows more about it than he himself does. As Rickkter hands it over, Misha explains that it is Tchaas-hurti, one of the Five Sisters, like Whisper is. Misha explains that each Sister is powerful but only explains itself to those they trust. Rickkter should be happy that he was permitted merely to hold it.
Once he has finished explaining about the Five Sisters, he explains that Tchaas-hurti's power is to create perfect disguises. They will disguise themselves as the Druzhina they ambushed and killed near Caralore. In an instant, each of them takes the appearance of one of the Druzhina. Teria is impressed; neither her magic sight nor her magic artifact, the Pearl of Truth, can dispel the illusions.
Misha orders they stay quiet as they approach the gate. Misha smoothly bluffs the captain of the guard with a story of quelling Caralore's rebellion. They pass through the tunnel and enter Nasojassa. The city is full of trash and guards. Eldrid directs them to the city center, where the inner city, Dubhar Tur, and the citadel are.
They pass the guards at the inner city gate, and find the inner city unnaturally clean and just as guarded. At a small courtyard, they infiltrate a clock tower to get a proper survey of the town and Nasoj's citadel. From a street corner, they survey Dubhar Tur. The tower is well-defended, but Misha boldly walks forward and hands the protesting guard his fake pass. The guard inspects it and hands it back, ordering him to proceed. A portal through the door hinders their progress, and Misha has to push his way through into the tower.
Part 6
The tower interior is clean and white, but unnaturally so, and there is always the feeling of something watching them. Misha waits for the rest of his team to pass through, and heads boldly down the hall, hoping not to show weakness to their watchers. He finds the stairs down and grabs the handrail. He and the others scream as their lives are drained. Edmund saves them with a holy prayer against the undead, at the cost of losing their disguises. Misha suggests they hurry onward, before the guards within the tower arrive to investigate.
Their progress down the stairs is limited by the wards placed on each individual step; both Teria and Rickkter have to disarm every one. At the bottom is the portal, already activated. The group wonders if it is trapped, until Edmund points out that it being one-way might be the trap. Misha tests it himself with his arm. It is safe, but Caroline shouts at him for his recklessness. Misha assures her that he knows the great danger he has put them all in, and he would have come alone to reclaim Whisper; he is also confident in their ability to succeed, and promises Caroline once again that when this is done, he will stop taking great risks.
Before entering the portal, he asks Tchaas-hurti to disguise him again. He also takes out an exploding egg, one of David's artifacts, and activates it before throwing it through the portal. He draws his swords and follows it.
The other side is devastated with corpses and scorch marks. Teria finds the exploding egg and lets Misha inspect and retrieve it. They continue on to avoid more guards.
The next door is locked. Misha lets Teria punch it with her magic. Beyond is a staircase. Misha senses Whisper lies above, and leads them upward. Along the way he is ambushed by a female mage, whom he quickly kills. At the top he meets a guard with a displacer beast named Emily. Misha's pass and disguise can fool the guard, but not the beast. Misha is forced to kill the guard, but he begs Rickkter to spare Emily's life.
They pass a room containing several dead bodies, without any obvious explanation. Further down the curved hallway, they come across a battle, both sides consisting of citadel guards. They backtrack and find an open untrapped door. Very suspicious of a hidden trap, Misha cautiously leads them in, where a line of guards stands on a raised platform above them. At the top of the stairs is an imperially dressed lieutenant Celerius and a female mage. With Misha's party still disguised, both sides ask each other who they are loyal to. Finally losing patience, Misha says he has come for his axe, and wills away their illusions. He launches into an attack on Celerius.
Teria casts an explosion in the platform to create a ramp for them, while Danielle launches Finbar directly into the fray. Padraic, Eldric, and Edmund charge into battle while Misha fights Celerius head-to-head. Ferwig fights with his magic spear, while Rickkter and Matthias fight side-by-side. Teria engages the female mage in magical combat; she is about to launch a fatal spell when Danielle kills her with an axe throw. Misha beheads Celerius, and the remaining soldiers flee where Misha's group came from. The battle is now over.
Part 7
They begin looting the corpses. Misha takes Celerius's severed head, knowing Pyralis has a large bounty for him. The team remembers Celerius's deeds and muses on how Nasoj will react to the apparent betrayal, but Misha is curious what he and his men were guarding. Finbar uses a carpenter's hammer to open a locked door, and Misha kills the three guards on the other side.
Inside is a room with several more locked doors. Finbar opens one to find a terrified, beaten and neglected female prisoner. Misha orders all of the cells opened. They find fifty-three prisoners, twenty of them close to death. Edmund urges Misha to take them all back to Metamor for treatment. Misha agonizes over this; Whisper is so close, but the prisoners are mere minutes from dying. In the end, he knows he could never forgive himself if some of them died because of him, and he knows Whisper can withstand anything that Nasoj tries. He reluctantly decides to return them all to Metamor.
Duke Thomas sees Misha's team traveling into Metamor with three large wagons. Misha spends more time checking the wagons than on meeting the Duke's gaze. Offended by his impertinence, Thomas confronts Misha over his recklessness and his desire for glory and treasure. Misha, however, retorts that the Duke still doesn't trust him, even after keeping the mystery of Zagrosek from him. Rickkter shows Thomas to the wagon, revealing they are full of escaped prisoners. Thomas apologizes for keeping secrets from him but maintains that he is still his sovereign and Misha can't afford to be reckless. Misha formally apologizes, revealing his absolute loss of trust in Thomas.
Thomas tells them they received word that the axe has been seen in Caralore, where it helped liberate the city. Misha declares he'll go there as soon as the prisoners are cared for.
After arriving in Caralore, Edmund prays in the chapel. The local priest, Guerin, asks him if he is familiar with the curse. Two prisoners had recently escaped from Nasoj's citadel, both morphs from Nasoj's magic. The female morph, whom Guerin has named Bridgette, has lost her memory and is unable to speak, read, or write. Edmund agrees to take her to Metamor so that the mages can try to heal her.
The axe Whisper lies in the back of a wagon. Teria stares at it, tantalized by it. She fantasizes about the power she could wield with it, but is horrified when she imagines beheading Ferwig over it. She loves him too much, and she realizes Whisper would never allow her to wield it.
She realizes Misha is glaring at her, and backs off. George asks if Whisper has spoken to her; Teria doesn't know. Misha reveals she actually touched it, and should be grateful to still be alive.
Misha takes Whisper, kisses it, and with a bold flourish, triumphantly reclaims it.
