Matthias and his friends share one last drink with Father Hough, who shares his thoughts on Metamor Keep.

It is afternoon on Easter Day. Matthias and Kimberly walk past the shops and enter the Deaf Mule. They join Nahum, Habakkuk, Tallis, Copernicus, Michael (covered in a robe), and Father Hough at a table. Matthias pays for everyone's dinner while Nahum starts a conversation.

Nahum suddenly asks Hough if he is going to move in with them, as there are enough Ecclesians to make a priest worthwhile. Matthias is nervous about the direction, but Hough says it is up to the Cardinals and the Patriarch to decide if Metamor gets a diocese and who will run it. Matthias asks if he would want to run the diocese if there was one, and Hough admits that he doesn't know; he is afraid of the curse, specifically of becoming a woman. Matthias understands, as such an event would cause huge theological fallout. He rephrases and asks if there were a new diocese in Metamor, if he would risk that possibility in order to be its priest. Hough decides that he would, much to everyone's relief.

Hough decides that he must leave to prepare his departure the next morning, but assures them he will be back in a few months. After he leaves to his private room, Habakkuk offers a toast to Father Hough.
