title pretty much says it all, i am writing a rather long (for me) story that spans from before 3-gates to fall 705 (and a little later), and i need to know the date of the battle so i don't screw up the time line too much. also what year did Duke Thomas take the throne? i doubt it should interfere with the story, but i want to make sure.
Many stories in the archives state that the curse has been in play for a varying amount of years, however, the second invasion by Nasoj is placed at 699 CR according to the history and events page on this forum. The first invasion was ten years prior, and the third was seven years after.
As for exact dates no one has set that down directly, so I guess I shall.
Logically and for the sake of efficiency almost all battles in midieval settings too place between planting and harvesting season if at all possible (of course this is never particularly the case).
So, let us assume that Nasoj moved as soon as the north was suitably thawed enough to move large armies. This would be well after the season was warm in Metamor, however, so… let us assume that he initiated his march in mid to late May, arriving at the Dikes in June and opened his assault there. Given overwhelming numbers he moved to the Keep in relatively swift fashion, which has always been his end goal. Generally he would try to bypass large concentrations of defenders and send only enough units to keep those centers of population bottled up in defense to prevent them harrying his rear.
So, Nasoj would have arrived at the Keep in late June to early July and engaged his siege. I have no idea how long the actual siege lasted, so let us say… in total 2 months of siege before he broke through the Killing Ground and sacked the keep town, moving to the gates of Metamor itself and the final battle to hold the Keep. The curses would then have been laid, let us say, in the early days of September, 699 CR.
This would force Nasoj to retreat with what remained of his forces before the cold came down in ernest, letting him retreat all the way to his fortress in the Death Mountains by winter.
Breaking the siege in that part of the season would still leave the remnants of Metamor and the Northern Midlands in a condition to harvest what crops escaped the siege and prepare themselves for a very, very bad winter.
I think that fits. I've always heard that the battle was sometime around late August or early September.
Keep in mind that the Northern Midlands weren't touched in that invasion — Nasoj never got past the bottleneck of the Keep itself — so most of the croplands would not have been harmed. Mycransburg suffered badly, though, and Castle Barnhardt probably got cut off from their supply lines and may have been starved into submission.
To be specific about the Battle of Three Gates and the northern fiefs, the ard'Kapler family which ruled Mycransburg was completely wiped out. The sole surviving member of the family was Wessex who was at Metamor being one of their primary mages.
The town of Glen Avery was essentially wiped off the map, with only a few buildings surviving. The then Lord Avery was killed while attempting to balk Nasoj's forces long enough for the people of the Glen to escape to the protection of Metamor. They were involved at the Battle of Three Gates, and almost all of them were at the gate where the animal curse was cast (which is why almost everyone at the Glen is an animal-morph).
Castle Barnhardt was sacked but not destroyed. Lord Barnhardt himself managed to escape with most of his people and they too were changed at Metamor. They did not suffer nearly as badly as the Glen or Mycransburg because at this point Nasoj's generals thought they had the northern reaches of the Valley secure enough to press on to Metamor.
Dominus vobiscum
