We are well met!
Harro, musers of Metamor!

The finest greetings to you fine folk! I stumbled across Metamor some time ago and was blown away by the depth and quality of the writing here. It was way out of my league…but now, I seek to try my hand!

So, any tips for the newly arrived? (Besides "Don't set mousetraps"…sorry, Charles!) Oooh, how 'bout your favorite stories? I've been going through the Beginner's list. Rites of Ascendancy and Liturgy of Blood are definitely my faves so far.

Many thanks, my well-met friends! I look forward to all manner of musery which I may find here!

Welcome! Glad to hear the beginner's list is getting some use! That's just a very small sample of what we have to offer, and it was pretty much guesswork trying to put together a set of tales that would give new readers a taste of what the setting is all about. If you feel there are any gaping holes in your MK understanding after getting through them, please let us know. :)

My only advice for newcomers is to relax and have a good time. Writing MK isn't nearly as difficult as one might think.

Welcome to MK!

Welcome to Metamor…

Now… GET OUT! ;D

No, seriously! :) There's so much happening at the Keep itself you'll be running around chasing your tail trying to figure out where, or how, to start. One good way to start is to start beyond the limits of Metamor, as one already cursed (As Murikeer was), or someone who has not yet been cursed and came to Metamor for whatever reason. In current timelines there are some 5 thousand refugees coming north seeking the purported miraculous healing Metamor's curse offers (many without fully understanding that the healing and curse go hand-in-paw).

Oh, and leave the Fox alone… and everyone knows of which fox I speak. :D He's spread more thin than a gallon of water on Mars.

Anyway, there are many ideas concerning Metamor;
Glen Avery, Mycransburg, events around the Giant Dikes (currently being re-fortified after the Winter Assault), in Euper, or the farmsteads around Metamor yet within the bounds of the Curse. There's even a Mithril mine being developed under the utmost security and paranod secrecy… plenty of room for spies & counterspies to have adventure.

Or even lone wanderers without any fixed job, title, or home… read Nut Buster who details his adventures well beyond the geographic limits of Metamor valley. It's the small details of lives that flesh out the Keep beyond the great movers and shakers that shudder the very walls of creation. Not everyone needs to be the Next Great Hero, after all.

Oooh…this complicates things. So much to read!

My plan was to have my three characters living to the north in lutin territory, and through various tragic and dramatic circumstances (a nearby homestead is sacked by lutins, one brother decides to chase after the attackers for vengeance, other two brothers chase after him to keep him from being stupid), they end up in the Keep, with one of their number severely banged up. The curse claims them as they wait for him to be cured. (Yes, I'm playing the trapped-in-the-Keep-for-medical-purposes card, yet again. :) )

Buuut if the Giant's Dike is being refortified, it means that could be…troublesome. How soon, after the Assault, did that plan commence? I need a band of lutins to breach that front and head south through the valley a ways for my plot to go as planned. …Any suggestions?

Well it's true the Giant's Dike is being refortified, but it's in no way finished yet. Besides could they possible like NORTH of the Giant's Dike? I'm not sure how far away the curse extends, but maybe to be safe you may want to be just a bit further away. Believe me there are so few ways to get yourself stuck in the keep by accident that we understand when someone has to replay certain ones. And shame to you Ryx, everyone knows the fox, but the new people can't know which fox you mean. For Trail's reference, the fox in question is Misha, leader of the longs. He is currently THE cameo of choice, and while it's perfectly fine to have him show up in your story, try not to rely on him too much. Too many people rely on him, and he's getting pulled out to handle the silliest of things. Anyway, I hope that helps ^_^

Well, if they're from anywhere north of the Dikes they'll know about the Curse and its effects. They would therefor know that their injured comrade is stuck for it, but they themselves can choose to flee its touch, so they have a good bit of weighing out of their choices: Stay, and be cursed, or leave and abandon their comrade.
Just for a point; medical reasons are one of the most common reasons for someone to stick around long enough to become cursed. Metamor's touch does heal, fully, all injuries and illnesses of mundane sorts and a good many magical ones as well. But it only does so once

Initial refortifying will begin in spring of 707 CR, though the full garrisoning will not take place for years. So the first year will see considerably increased patrols and work crews fortifying areas that can be most easily repaired to serve as lodging for the garrisons assinged there. In the coming years further enhancements will be made (allowing for the repeated destruction due to Lilith's attack in 708). Thus, someone living north of the dikes could easily slip through unnoticed. As could small Lutin raiding parties, with Dire mounts, or even a giant or two (that being quite unlikely… giants are far from subtle).

Small Lutin raiding parties will continue to slip into Metamor valley for … well, forever. Nothing can truly stop them as they can make their way around any fortifications via high passes if they really really want to get south. Until the uprising of the Ghost Horde (711-713, roughly) Lutins will remain a minor threat. Read: minor as their tribes have been decimated by the failed assault in 706, and subsequent rise of Lilith's faithful in Lik and the surrounding Dark Forest ("The Murk" on maps) that pushes them even further afield.

Cool. Guess I'm moving my homestead north of the Dike, then. That'll work!

HA! Yeah, figured that was Misha. But he's so cameo-able! :P Actually, the cameo I'm more interested in is Merai—for this story, at least. I suspect the brothers will be in contact with Misha at some point, as their knowledge of the region past the Dike will be valuable to the Longs. But I'll try not run poor Brightleaf ragged ;) For now, I just need a friendly Lightbringer to bring poor Kash back from hells' door…

Bwaha! You guessed it. That scene is going to be tons of fun to write!

Rebuilding Giants Dike? Whose plot is this? It is an idea George and Misha would support. But it would take MANY years. Building a stone wall 15 feet high and several miles long would take time.

First off they would clear the woods and brush from the line of the wall. Then patrol the open ground created more intensely.

Ha! Easy for YOU to say :P I've been working on my second story for months now. Acursed writer's block! Anyway, hi ^_^ don't mind me, or pay attention to that mini-rant, it really IS easier than you'd think, if I actually put effort into it, I'd finish pretty quickly (I've only 4 or so scenes left to write) but I've been distracted by various kinds of school work (got three big projects due next week >.<) and about a bajillion different webcomics >.> Mostly it's just extreme writer's block though.

ANYWAY! Welcome to MK ^_^. I'm Kit and as for advice? Try to come up with an original character, someone who is wholly your own. Once you have a character, it's easier to create a story for that person. And then, once you've created this original character of your own… go check the other characters to make sure it's actually original. That was MY mistake… I created my character way when I first started reading the archives. As I went on, I noticed quite a bunch of foxes, but I thought, 'that's ok, MY fox is also a mage' but there were a bunch of those too. And then I thought, 'bah, I'll bet I'm the only one who though of AGE regressing MY fox ^_^' and then I got to Virmir's stories and I was like 'crap.' ;>.> So yeah, they're completely different people, but you wouldn't know from looking.

As for suggested readings… I just read through the whole archive straight, and that's what I'd recommend to others, except I'm told that it takes forever for most people. So I'm afraid I can't recommend any good ones. You say a title and I can give you my impression on it, but for me it's just weird reading them out of order.
