Hmm. Ok. That I can do easily enough. I could also toss in some tales of 'evil silkies drowning people and stealing babies'. The silkies of European legends were also said to snatch children and people.

I still suggest you put the Selkies to the west of the river mouth, in the midst of the Dragon mountain shores where they can be isolated and relatively free from interference.

Dominus tecum

Misha only stated that there is a village of Selkies on the coast. I assume he refers to the Sea of Stars. If he placed this village on the eastern extent of the Dragon mountains beyond the mouth of Metamor's river which is rather inaccessible and likely dotted with small villages who tend not to be bothered too much by anybody (not easy to reach them by land and all), then it would make perfect sense. But if they are on the eastern side of the river, then they'd be along traffic lanes and would have been driven out.

Dominus tecum

The Silkie are a VERY SMALL colony less then a hundred people and live in an area off the beaten track. Look at the map the are I am talking about has NO cities are roads going to it. All merchant traffic lands at Menth and bypasses that river mouth. This is an isolated area. The real Silkie population lives elsewhere - far from the Midlands.

I think I see what you're getting at now and agree that it is ripe for a story or two. However isn't there also a substantial mountain range (Dragon Mountains) between Metamor and where the Selkies are located? While this puts them on the valley's doorstep in some ways it also put a natural curtain wall between Metamor and the Selkies.

Or are you thinking that they live in the Sea of Souls or Sea of Stars? Personally I wouldn't see the Sea of Souls having a seal population as it is land locked. Sea of Stars might have seals depending on how populous we were to consider the coast to be.

Am I still missing the point here?

But that's not the point.

The point is that early on in Metamor Keep's existence, it was established that people of this time found transformation magics to be particularly repugnant and seen as evil. Regardless of how peaceful the Selkies would be, that they use transformation magic would make them hated by their neighbours. They wouldn't be able to be open about who they are at all.

Further, while just sticking things in places that haven't been used or aren't close to places that haven't been used in a story is perfectly appropriate. This on Metamor Valley's doorstep and has never been mentioned before at all! It just strikes me as too much of a good thing and not very plausible.

Dominus tecum

A good question. Perhaps they exist because of the fear/respect shown to the Droulee (seal people of sunken Ceasarath). And considering MK's own experience with the Haunted Woods I'm not sure may would want to mess with Suielman magic.

It seems like a cool idea, but if there is such a fear of shapeshifters in the Metamor Keep universe, how in the heck have Selkies been able to survive unmolested all these years?

Dominus tecum
