I probably shouldn't listen to music while I write, since I'm more likely to get distracted, start singing or dancing or something like that… even without music I tend to wander off from what I was doing. Heck, I probably spent most of the last five minutes wandering between my room and the living room… So silence for me too.

I'd check Amazon.com myself. I bought the Stargate soundtrack way back when the movie came out all those years ago.

Dominus tecum

It's ironic you mention Chrono Trigger. When I first played that game, I had at the same time borrowed some CDs from the library (Brahms 3rd and 4th Symphonies, Roy Harris and William Schuman 3rd Symphonies, Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 1, Franck Symphony in D Minor), so that whenever I hear any of the above, I tend to think of Chrono Trigger now. :-)

And, also ironically, they are amongst my favorite music to listen to. :-)

Dominus tecum

I've got entire 'soundtrack' playlists for my characters, to help me brainstorm, but when I'm actually writing, I prefer to have as few distractions as possible. Matt, where can I find that Stargate music? LW, a similar question for you. Thanks!

Hallan

Depends on my mood. I'll listen to just about anything while writing, although the emotions I'm working on often influence track choice. I believe I've mentioned my particular heavy metal remix of the Magus Battle theme from Chrono Trigger that i use for scenes with heavy use of anger and hate. :D

As for lyrics, I can listen to anything with lyrics provided that I know them. I even sing along sometimes without even thinking about it. :D

You don't need to lock yourself from the world to have a quiet environment >_>

When i write i usually listen to any kind of music as long as it's instrumental only (no lyrics). Sometimes it can easily distract me from the writing, specially if it's on the same language I'm writing at the moment.
Knowing this, i can listen to some foreign language music without much trouble most of the time (Enya comes to my mind right now, with many songs in Celtic languages).

Congrats, Matt!

Gah… I need dead silence to write. Curtains shut, doors closed, zero distractions. ;)

I have just completed the climax to Last Tale of Yajakali. This is a climax I've been working toward for ten years. And I did it while listening to the dramatic climax from the soundtrack to the movie Stargate. Holy smokes was that inspirational as I typed what I've been imagining for so long!

What music do you all like to listen to as you write? What helps your muse to speak and what hinders it?

Dominus vobiscum
