I have no ebook readers yet (who can afford $200-300+ just to read books? At that price, I'd go for a small laptop), but plan to get one when they come down to affordable prices (I'm thinking <$30).

Are there any plans to make the story archives downloadable en-masse for such devices instead of manually saving each page of each story one by one?

Okay, so if you've been looking at the "Recent Changes" on the wiki, you might have noticed my name (almost?) exclusively listed on every edit for a page or two (or more). Let's just say I've been very busy. ^_-

That being said, I wanted to bring attention to a feature that might be unknown to many, and doesn't seem to be utilized much (thought it probably hasn't much needed to be, either), and then discuss a new project, as it were, for the wiki.

First, For those that don't know, there's a discuss button at the bottom of every page in the wiki, which leads to a 'hidden' section of the forums with a thread dedicated to each page. Said thread is automatically created the first time someone clicks on the 'discuss' button at the bottom of the page. This allows for relevant discussion at the page-level easily accessible from the page itself. Also, if there are posts in the page-specific thread, I don't know how much interest there is in utilizing this feature, but I want to make sure people were aware of it.

Second, there is an "include" feature, that allows one page to be included in another when rendered, parameters can even be passed to the included page for substitution. Using this feature, certain boilerplate code can easily be inserted into pages without having to re-type it every time. I've started working on a set of includes (as I'm calling them) to provide such boilerplate wiki code. If you're interested in creating more of these, or want to check out what's already been created so far, you can look here.

Hey folks,

First a bit of news on the server end. I did a bit a research on some commercial servers and have come to the conclusion that they all stink. :) Thaeus' suggestion of xepher.net seems about our best option. (Which I second, as my personal site is hosted there.) That may be a while in coming though, as he's not accepting new applications at the moment.

No need to worry about that right now. I've set up some stuff on a temp server to play around with. (Actually this looks decent, and it's fairly cheap, but we'll see how it goes first.) Anyway, with a temp server set up, I can finally show you some stuff!

http://metamorkeep.com/stories/index_new.php

This is kinda how I see the new story list page as looking. I've only got a few stories/authors/story arcs listed in the database at the moment. This is just play data to show you what I have planned. Entering all the stories in there is going to take a bit of work. ;)

I plan on implementing things in short, manageable "phases". Phase 1 will include:

Paginated story list (X stories per page)

List all stories part of story arc Y (see above demo)

List all stories by author Z (see above demo)

Since phase 1 will focus on story arcs, I strongly encourage everyone to help fill out this page. In particular, I'd really like to see Ryx's stories broken down. He definitely has more than one story thread going on there.
Other ideas for future phases:

Author pages: Each author has a page with his/her contact info and every story written (may just throw this up in phase 1)

Date breakdown (I can make *really* cool things happen if every story has a date range associated with it. :) )

Feel free to post questions/comments/suggestions! The above is just one of many ways we can display the stories. If you have other ideas, feel free to share!

Not sure where to post this… because there is no place set up for posts like this. Hence, this suggestion!

I think the forum would benefit from a "Technical" category, set up for suggestions and general discussion involving the things that keep the community together. This would include discussion of the archive site, the wiki, these forums, the MK IRC channel, etc. Lately when I've been making topics about the archives, I haven't been sure where to put them. :)

Examples of posts that would go here:

My topic asking people's thoughts on moving the archive to a new server. Doesn't really fit in the announcements section.

Rich's posts about IRC. Randomness is more for off-topic stuff. These are technical and on-topic. :)

This very post. :)

Thoughts?

Currently, the IRC net seems to be down. We will contact when it returns to normal functioning while we are on. It crashed at 2150, and has not come back up since.

We recommend these following alternative steps:

1) Establish other messanging capibilities. The Trillian program is recommended for this, with the capibility of hosting any type of IM program.
2) Sulk at home. Your choice. It'll be kinda boring without you.
3) Try and start up a forum chat board. This one 'll be harder, though. Don't have the resources personally.
4) umm… there is no number 4?

Anyway… Sorry about this, blame the server, not the people!

Hey folks,

As some of you may know, Chris O'Kane and I have been trying to contact the transform.to server owner to see if we can get a database installed for the archive site. It's been, what, like two months now? We've had no luck at all. I'm almost ready to start sacrificing goats in my back yard or something, cause we've tried everything else. :)

Anyway, I'd really like to get a database to play around with. We've got some 330 stories and the submissions are not slowing down at all. :) Converting them to HTML and throwing them on that one (absurdly long) static page is easy enough, but in order to implement the story arc breakdowns, author breakdowns, etc. easily, I think a database is the way to go. Plus we can do fun stuff like "show all stories that feature the character Drift," depending on how wild we want to get. :)

So what do you guys think about buying our own server space? It would be something like $6-$10 per month. The primary reason for this is that, well, we don't want to wait months on end to *maybe* get the attention of someone who can install stuff for us (blast it!) When you guys bring awesome ideas to me, I want to get the stuff set up so I can start programming them right away. :)

Just for fun, I bought the domain metamorkeep.com, and this would be the address of the new site, if this is the direction we want to take. (Don't worry about existing links to the current address— I can make those redirect.)

If you guys don't want to do this, no big deal. I can continue updating the static pages as I've been doing. I can add some static story arc pages, although I doubt I'd be able to do them all as there would just be far too many to sanely maintain.1 And I can just make metamorkeep.com go to the current archives.

Let me know what you think!

Footnotes

1. Just a note on web terminology I'm using. A "static" page is a page I have to manually go in and update. Meaning if a story needs to be on X pages, I need to update those X pages when I add the story to the site. This is opposed to a "dynamic" page, which pulls its data from a database. So if those pages were all dynamic (and obviously a bit of programming is involved), then I only need to add the story to the database, and it would automatically appear everywhere else on the site where it needs to be. Magic!
