Once a knight of Yesulam, Egland survived the slaughter of the Patriarch's camp, but was too wounded to leave the valley, and so suffered Metamor's curse. He was transformed into an elk, and became a knight errant of Metamor. During the winter assualt, he helped rescue Duke Thomas from the hand of his friend Sir Bryonoth (who later became Alberta Artelanoth). It was at that time that Intoran, who was secretly his lover, became his squire. Egland is proud to be a knight, and would be nothing else now, but his truest passion lies in playing the viola.
